A reoccuring concept we see in The Prince by Machiavelli is fear and terror. I believe the main purpose or point in war is to create this panic and fear so everyone would be afraid to challenge that person or nation or whatever it may be. Isis has been doing so in the current attacks that they have been creating. This situation calls for attention and retaliation but i think that is exactly what ISIS wants France to do, to retaliate. When the people fight back and start mass destruction, people will be forced to choose sides. This will just create tension and conflict between the nations.

Another great example on how the Prince is relevant today is through leaders. You can see that many leaders have adapted to some of the ways that Machiavelli seems to believe are the key to maintaining leadership. When I think of someone who rules by fear, the leader that comes to my mind is Kim Jong something, who achieved his power through lineage and fortune. In this past year, there was a video that went viral about this young lady who had escaped North Korea. She spoke to the public about the horrific way of living in North Korea.

It is without a doubt that these ideas expressed by Machiavelli are still applicable today; there are even some parents who lead the household by fear!

QUARTER REFLECTION: Throughout this quarter, my views on war has changed multiple times. Initially, I felt war was unnecessary and senseless and reading The Iliad definitely stenghtened that opinion. I felt war was just a competition of who was best and The Iliad portrayed war like it was a competion, in my opinion. As I read Mother Courage and Her Children, I started understanding how war is something that is bound to happen and it helps with business. In history class, we learned that war got us out of the Great Depression. War is necessary. As I read Just and Unjust Wars, war seemed like a mind games because Walzer talks about how to win a war strategically.
